contact 作名词时，既可作单数，也可作复数。英国人习惯用其单数形式，而美国人则习惯用其复数形式，表示“联系”的意思。

表示“开始与某人接触”时，可以用以下来两种表达方式：come into contact
with和come in contact
with。前者比后者使用更频繁；
make contact
with 表示“与某人进行接触”；
contact 的几个注意点：有时可指“被联系的人”。contact 还常有“跟（无线电台）通信”或“跟……交战”的意思。

这两个词都可表示“接触”“联系”。其区别在于:touch指具体的、感觉器官的接触,并暗示这类接触所带来的优美或亲密的感觉; 而contact指抽象的接触,仅指“联系”而身体未必接触。例如:

:contact强调紧密接触的两个物体之间的相互关系。也可用作比喻。
:touch指具体意义“接触”时，强调动作；表抽象意义时，侧重“联系”。
这些动词均有“遇见、会见、碰见”之意。
:meet普通用词，本义指双方或多方从不同方向或相反方向作相对运动，最终相碰(遇)。
:encounter通常指遇到困难或挫折，也指偶然或意外地相遇。
:confront&不可避免地，面对面地相遇，也指敢于正视困难或问题。
:face侧重双方静止地面对面，或指充满勇气、信心和决心去正视人或事。
:contact多指通过书信、电话或直接会面和别人联系，口语用词。
错句举例与错句分析
错句：the painter lived more than a decade in europe, where he could have contact with other cubists.
纠正：the painter lived more than a decade in europe, where he could be in contact with other cubists.
翻译：这个画家在欧洲，这个可以同其他立体派画家交流交往的地方生活十几年了。
分析：表示“与人接触”时，常用 be in contact with。
17世纪20年代进入英语，直接源自拉丁语的contingere:com(一起）+tangere(接触），意为在一起接触。
