Ordinary CPU Benchmarks is not appropriate for pcsx2, because some technologies in CPU are useless for pcsx2 but useful for general PC tasks. So that we desire a CPU Benchmark specifically designed for pcsx2.
We don't need any external benchmark tools. pcsx2 itself is already the goody, the number of FPS shown in GSdx can be pretended as score.
A place in a game of pcsx2 should be awful CPU-intensive as well as CPU becomes bottleneck to the mass of people. In such place the FPS is valuable as benchmark scores.
The whereabouts I picked is the well-known slow Final Fantasy X-2 FMVs. Why not other games? I believe there may other games are more cpu-intensive than FFX-2 FMVs in the world. But FFX-2 is famous owed to the reputation of its ancestor Final Fantasy X, I would think everybody possessed it.
The scene used for benchmark is in the first FMV after pressing New Game, especially where a few ferries in front of stadium, because frames in there are moving slow we can take screenshot almost on same position.
Your CPU almost won't become bottleneck in PCSX2 Games if you can play FFX-2 FMVs in full speed without speedhacks or any other tricks.
Preparation
For standardization, from this day forth, we are using the same Operating System and the same version of PCSX2 in this benchmark.
Operating System: Windows 7 x86 or x64, Vista SP2 x86, Windows XP SP3, I've confirmed at least there are no differences in the game speed among these Operating Systems at this point on this benchmark.
Note: Disable Aero Theme as it may decrease speed.
Pcsx2 and Plugins:
and . But the plugin package lacks DEV9null, you can extract a DEV9null from the installer of beta 1888 by 7-zip.
Before you ask, I tell you Why this benchmark persists with PCSX2 0.9.6 1888 as newer version of PCSX2 available. Wrote:This benchmark was created on Apirl 12 2010 when the latest version of PCSX2 is 0.9.6 1888
This benchmark is aiming at CPU Performance under PCSX2, any version of PCSX2 is adequate, it's not necessary to use up-to-date version of PCSX2, despite new version of PCSX2 typically have more FPS.
What the hell if we redo all existing benchmark results with the latest version of PCSX2 ONCE A NEW VERSION OF PCSX2 RELEASED!
Note: We are using the same version of pcsx2, cuz the results may vary in various revisions of pcsx2 that each one uses ought to be different.
Delete the inis folder if existed in pcsx2's main directory, then you can configure pcsx2 from beginning. This ensures all settings are default.
All settings are default except for those I mentioned below, you should know there are no speedhacks or any other tricks by default settings. Now let's configure pcsx2 from beginning.
GSdx: Of course, choose the version of highest instruction that your CPU can reach, among SSE2 SSSE3 and SSE4.1
GSdx settings:
Renderer: Direct3D10 (Software), Direct3D9 (Software) if on Windows XP SP3.
Interlacing: Blend bff (slight blur, 1/2 fps) for suppress the vibration displaying in FMV, no speed impact.
Aspect Ratio: Either option you wish, this doesn't affect speed.
Note: Here I leave SW rend. threads unchanged with 1. I know GSdx in Software mode can exploit more than 2 cores to give you additional speed boost, but it's GSdx not pcsx2 itself can take advantage of more than 2 cores by now. It will be unfair to Dual-Core users if increased the number of software render threads.
Lilypad: Assign keys to buttons in Pad 1.
Linuz Iso CDVD: Select the FFX-2 ISO in your custom path.
Plugin list to be confirmed: GSdx, SPU2-X, Lilypad, Linuz Iso CDVD, DEV9null, USBnull, FWnull.
Pcsx2 itself: Config -> Cpu, changes Frame Limiting to Normal. Disables frame limiting, hopefully you can go higher above normal speed.
Now you're done, click File -> Run CD/DVD to start bechmark.
IMPORTANT! Please report the AVERAGE FPS you get after you have done the procedure 3 times. So for example, if the first time you got 55.12 FPS, the second time 51.24 FPS and the third time 57.36 FPS, your FINAL FPS should be (55.12+51.24+57.36)/3=54.57 FPS.
Participants post their FPS in circumstance at stock speed and overclocking (only if you are willing to overclock). And I shall update the database at the end of this essay regularly.
Note: The result at stock speed is also priceless, because not all people on earth are tending to overclock. they might purchase a cpu holding very high frequency at stock speed.
Participants can participate in this benchmark once again after building a new PC, changing CPU, or achieving a higher peak in overclocking at the same CPU.
The data you should report in:
Game region: NTSC or PAL. I'll separate the data into two parts of NTSC and PAL. Because normal speed in NTSC game is 60 FPS but in PAL game is 50 FPS.
FPS: Full fps shown in window title, e.g. 45.67 FPS. There are deviation but I suppose it will be less than 1 FPS that can be ignored.
Game serial: e.g. SLUS 20672. the FPS is different between the US version of FFX-2 and Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission (SLPM 65478), they are both NTSC games though.
Open the game's iso with 7-zip, then you'll see something like SLUS_206.72 as game serial.
Full name of CPU: e.g. Intel Core 2 Duo E7200. Because we may got confused with abbreviation, e.g. there are two species of E6300, Pentium Dual-Core and Core 2 Duo. Go check
if you are uncertain.
CPU Frequency in GHz whether or not overclocked: e.g. 2.53 GHz Stock, 3.8 GHz OC.
You better disable
if your CPU supports it (typically Core i5 and Core i7, it's called Turbo Core in AMD Phenom II X6), so it won't give you a FAKE result on current clock speed which will be automatically overclocked by Turbo Boost during benchmark. However Sandy Bridge is an exception you gotta enable Turbo Boost first before you can overclock it.
Specifically clarify you turned on Turbo Boost if insist, but don't expect it too much better than manual overclocking.
Unless the result at Stock speed of same model's or series' CPU as yours had existed in DATABASE already,
you must at least submit your achievement at Stock speed(not overclocked) without Turbo Boost.
I interpret Stock as matching default cpu frequency EXACTLY! e.g. 3.3 GHz Stock or 3.3 GHz Stock (Turbo Boost OFF) for an i5-2500K running at its default speed without Turbo Boost.
Viewpoint on enable/disable Turbo Boost:
ilovejeddI think both results should be included and clearly labelled as such. The one with Turbo Boost disabled to give us a gauge on performance scaling with clock rate. The one with Turbo Boost enabled to show performance at stock configuration for those who don't want to overclock or buy non-overclockable OEM computers.
CPU-Z Validation (Optional): hands out additional information about your computer hardware.
Demonstration of records, the suffix is your user name in forum, before the link of CPU-Z Validation if submitted.
58.61 FPS - SLUS 20672 - Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - 3.8 GHz OC - pcsx2fan -
40.10 FPS - SLUS 20672 - Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - 2.53 GHz Stock - pcsx2fan
No shame on low-end PC
Not only a general benchmark, as well as a benchmark especially for yourself. You will submit your data again after building your new PC to compare the difference from results to see how grand you gained from a new computer. Low scores are also helpful to complete the benchmark charts like general cpu benchmarks always have low scores.
Tips for overclocking specific CPU
AMD Phenom II X2: No speed changes with AMD Phenom II X2 if unlocked to 4 cores.
Intel Core i3 5x0:
Butz_sanFor the people using core i3, disable HT in the bios would give you -10-15° in the temperatures, so if you were having 73°, you would get 63 or even less, it's just a hint for those i3 overclockers
Hyper-threading: Enable Hyper Threading(HT) may or may not help improve FPS, experiment it yourself to see if you can get more FPS.
RAM Overclocking: Overclocking RAM(DDR2-800, DDR3-1333, etc.) may or may not help improve FPS, experiment it yourself to see if you can get more FPS.
The last affair before benchmark
You should close running programs as many as possible. As every running program is occupying cpu power, causes less cpu power left to this benchmark in which CPU is always bottleneck and you'll get less FPS. Such as from Firefox which damage FPS a bit, to Antivirus which consuming more cpu power and losing more FPS.
DATABASE sorts records in descending order by FPS
The highest version of GSdx in use in database

Excited to see you can play the FMV at full speed. but the pcsx2 you were using is 0.9.7, this infringe the contest regulations in the section of Preparation. Read carefully:
Quote:Pcsx2 and Plugins: Official beta 1888 and plugins on March 11th 2010. But the plugin package lacks DEV9null, you can extract a DEV9null from the installer of beta 1888 by 7-zip.
We are using the same version of pcsx2, cuz the results may vary in various revisions of pcsx2 that each one uses ought to be different.
You can participate again with the required version of pcsx2.

Sorry about that, I guess I glanced at it too quick. I edited my post above with the right results, turns out I got better performance using pcsx2 r1888
Will post the non-OC results tomorrow, too tired to mess around with it now.

I don't think it's enough to justify the price premium, though.
It'll be nice to see results for Clarkdale, the Core i3-530 in particular. Iirc, the E7200 had 1ku pricing of $113 when it was first released - exactly the price point the i3-530 is occupying now. It'll be interesting how new "budget" tech compares to the old one. I'd run the benchmark but I need to find my FFX-2 disc. Hopefully, it hasn't been converted into a coaster.

You should really have selected a scene with (heavy) VU work ><.
This FMV scene is nice, but the majority of users will want to know how their pc performs in game, not in a video.

That's a brilliant idea. but I think it's difficult to come true. First off, this gotta be a game almost everyone own, then that game will spontaneously become a natural test suite. Or the team may make a test suite in a form of ISO or ELF file or something to instead?
I saw the result you submitted with interlacing set to none, I've considered your result as genuine since it doesn't affect speed. Blend bff (slight blur, 1/2 fps) is used to suppress the vibration displaying in FMV.
Don't forget to post your result at stock speed. The result at stock speed is also priceless, because not all people on earth are tending to overclock. they might purchase a cpu holding very high frequency at stock speed.
